FAQ: Best practices in PDF management in PackLMS
Netex has identified some problems with viewing PDF content in various browsers that can affect the user experience of our products. However, web browsers as different technologies for displaying content such as PDF (owned by Adobe) are 3rd party products and with restricted access, so we can not modify or affect their operation. However, we can provide good practices and measures that will facilitate better use of the product.
With this document we want to present several alternatives that will never give problems when viewing the content on multiple remote platforms.
Alternative 1: Modify the size of the uploaded PDFs so that they do not exceed 2 to 4 Mb. We have detected that the weight of the file is related to the preview problem, linked to the RAM of the affected computer. A PC with 8 megs will start having problems from 2 Mb file size. We recommend splitting PDFs into smaller files, there are many ways to break these files into smaller pieces or even compress them, an internet search will result in many different solutions to this.
Alternative 2: Publish as a link instead of using the File activity and upload the whole file. We will use this only if our PDF is one more activity in the learningCentral course. If it is documentation added to the library or to the course itself we recommend adding the link, not the file.
Alternative 3: Install the Adobe extension in your browser. Although it is a more invasive solution in the local computer, it will avoid changing all the source contents.
Alternative 4: Enable the download of the PDF directly from the browser. This is a similar alternative to the second one, but there is no need to install new software. The links to how it is done in different browsers are available in different documentation throughout the Internet, we propose this example of non-Netex sources.
